Canberra's Carillon

Posted by Sidonie (Sydney, Australia) on 24 March 2007 in Architecture and Portfolio.

Aspen Island, Lake Burley Griffin.

The carillon in Canberra was a gift from the British government to the people of Australia to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the National Capital. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the National Carillon on 26 April 1970. The tower is 50 metres high and has 55 bells.

It chimes every 15 minutes and the number of hours on the hour. At weekends the carillonists play popular melodies, jazz, and the classics. Its "music" resounds across the lake - which I have dubbed ECHO'S POND!

This shot gives the impression the Carillon is propped up on one side by a very thin pylon with a portal that leads nowhere.
