The Broken PitcherPosted by Sidonie (Sydney, Australia) on 11 January 2007 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio. Painting by William-Adolphe Bouguereau, France 1825-1905. I bought her for a dollar in a flea market. She lives on my bedroom wall. Reproduction is a blurry photograph printed on thick plywood - slightly curved now because of neglect and age. I gaze at her everyday and wonder about the life of a girl in 19th century France whose job it was to carry water from the well in a heavy vessel. Bourgeurau paints the event at the moment of crisis/failure. The water vessel = pitcher lies broken at her feet with a crack through its base. Is she confessing to clumsiness? Are we to chide her? ... broken pitcher/picture
